IV: Reflections

Indigenous Education is such a big topic. It is difficult to even imagine the experiences of Indigenous children and families who were forced to endure the neglect, abuse, and loss of culture at the hands of those who were running the residential schools. It is heartbreaking to think that they believed that sending their children away was for their benefit, when in reality many children were subjected to unfathomable abuse. It is challenging to even make sense of the intentions of the individuals who ran poorly funded institutions such as the residential schools and why they believed so deeply that it was necessary to strip these people of their culture. So many questions are raised on this topic about “Why?” and “How?” As a woman who wants to go into teaching because I want to help children learn and help them become the best they can be, I am unable to understand why anyone thought this was okay.
