Upon graduating high school, I had planned on attending the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, BC to work towards studying kinesiology. I had high hopes of becoming a physiotherapist or a nutritionist because I had developed a passion for health, nutrition, and fitness in my final years of high school.
However, that plan did not go through. I ended up taking a year off of university to work full-time and volunteer with children and youth at my church.
The following year, I moved to Calgary, AB to attend a Christian university called Ambrose University. Determined to follow my passion for health and nutrition, I once again enrolled in a science program that would eventually point me in the direction of kinesiology. But, like many first-year university students, school wasn’t my priority and relying on my outdated high school science background (which, although my grades were great, I never tried that hard so I didn’t have any positive study habits), didn’t get me very far. Needless to say, I got a C- in chemistry and a really humbling F in calculus. I figured it was time to reevaluate my plans…
I called my mom and told her that I was thinking it was time to move back home. In my brain, I went back to what I knew I loved… School and children. Without hesitation, I decided to pursue elementary education as a career.
Because I love English and writing, I chose to major in English at Thompson Rivers University. After taking a handful of history classes, I decided that I enjoyed it enough to make it my minor. I am currently in my 4th year of university; however, I have decided to extend my degree an extra year to lighten my course load and open up the opportunity to work, volunteer, and work on my mental health!
After I graduate, I intend on completing my BEd at UBC, SFU, or U of C. I keep thinking about how funny it would be if at the end of my university career, I ended up at UBC… The place where is was all supposed to start.
